"Miles To Go Before We Sleep" Two,
by Ernest Varner
On July 25, 1992 in a speech at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to
dedicate a monument to the memories of the heroic Buffalo
Soldiers, General Colin Powell said: "All of us need to know
where we came from so our young people will know where they are
going ... I am deeply mindful of the debt I owe to those who went
before me. I climbed on their backs ... I challenge every young
person here today: don't forget their service and their sacrifice;
and don't forget our service and sacrifice, and climb on our
backs. Be Eagles!"
As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Powell held the
highest rank and position and African-American had obtained in
the armed services. By accepting the appointment of Secretary of
State, he serves in the highest office an African-American has
held in this land.
